As we're all dealing with the COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic, we're keeping our two cafes OPEN. As designated essential businesses providing food and drink, both our 2271 Union Street San Francisco cafe and our 1600 Shattuck Avenue Berkeley cafe are open for normal hours, 7:00am to 6:00pm weekdays and 8:00am to 6:00pm Saturdays and Sundays.
We have implemented ZERO-CONTACT ordering and pickup, serving you through our front doors on a special counter that we designed specifically to maximize the safety and health of our baristas and our customers. There are no self-service accessories or condiments, and our baristas will pour the requested amount of milk or alternative milk for you. We are cleaning our touchscreen point-of-sale frequently, but for additional protection we're supplying wax paper squares for customers to wrap their fingers with before interacting with the touchscreen. All cash is being handled only with single-use gloves on.
Also, we've installed a plexiglass screen above our counter to minimize risks to health and safety for both our baristas and our customers. We're proud that our innovations have been implemented at other cafes from around the country, and we're encouraged and heartened by the efforts of so many of our fellow cafe businesses and other Americans around the country and within our local communities.
Also, our Shattuck Avenue Berkeley cafe is now available for delivery exclusively on Postmates.
Through this crisis, we've made a commitment to the 23 employees of Wrecking Ball Coffee Roasters. We've been able to stay open with no cuts or layoffs for our cafe staff, despite now having to go into a cashflow-negative position. Our administrative and roasting staff has reduced hours, and our Berkeley cafe has experienced more loss of business and net compensation because of reduced tips. We're in constant communication with each of our staff members and have committed to supporting their decisions and choices about how we proceed collectively and individually.
The baristas have set up an emergency fund to be distributed among the staff. If you can, please contribute.
We're trying to help be a resource and support for our specialty coffee industry community by putting out content that's intended to inform and inspire our colleagues in different ways to respond to the "new normal." Here are some of those links:
- "We turned into a walk-up window cafe"
- "Hospitality during Coronavirus"
- Our YouTube channel, where we're doing a series of interviews with industry colleagues

If you're not local, we're continuing to roast and ship coffee to addresses around the country. Please order and enjoy our coffees.
Please keep in touch and keep sending us your photos and tagging us in your posts. It's been truly inspiring to see our communities come together through this crisis, and though we don't know when it will be over, we know that when we do, we'll be stronger in so many ways because of our relationships.
